There is no single national answer. Under the Criminal Code, each province conducts and manages gambling within its own borders, so what is available to you depends on where you live and where you are physically located when you play. This guide sets out the position in each province and territory as it stands in August 2026.

Two things follow from the way Canadian law is structured. First, a province can run its own online casino platform, or licence private operators, or both. Second, no operator is “legal everywhere in Canada” — any site claiming that is telling you something the law does not support.
Ontario has run a registered private market since April 2022. A legal operator holds a registration with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. That combination is what makes an Ontario site part of the regulated market, and the iGaming Ontario register of regulated operators is the public list.
Ontario accounts generally require you to be physically in Ontario when you play. The registered market also brings provincial advertising rules, mandatory player-protection tools and a route to escalate a complaint within the province.

Alberta has had a government platform, PlayAlberta, run by the Alcohol, Gaming, Cannabis and Racing Commission for several years. Alongside it, Alberta began opening a private online market on 13 July 2026 under provincial iGaming legislation, with the AGLC as regulator.
That is a genuine change, and it is early. Which private operators are licensed in Alberta, and when each one goes live, is a matter for the AGLC — not for us. We do not state that any casino on this site holds an Alberta licence, because that is not documented here. If you are in Alberta, check the AGLC and the operator’s own site before you register.
Alberta’s legal gambling age is 18.
British Columbia’s regulated online gambling is provided through PlayNow.com, operated by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. BC has not opened an Ontario-style register of private operators, so there is no provincial list of licensed private casinos to check.
That leaves players outside PlayNow looking at operators licensed elsewhere, such as the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. Those are real licences, but they are not provincial authorisations and they do not come with BC dispute escalation. The legal gambling age in British Columbia is 19.
Quebec’s provincial online offering is Espacejeux, operated by Loto-Québec. As in British Columbia, Quebec has not created a private licensing register, so there is no provincial list of approved private operators.
Quebec’s legal gambling age is 18. Quebec also has its own French-language requirements for commercial communications, which is one reason operator availability differs there.
Manitoba. Manitoba provides regulated online gambling through PlayNow, delivered in partnership with the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. There is no Manitoba register of private online casino licences. Manitoba’s legal gambling age is 18.
Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan also has a provincial PlayNow platform, delivered in partnership with BCLC and Saskatchewan gaming interests. Again, there is no provincial private-licensing register. Saskatchewan’s legal gambling age is 19.
In both provinces, players who use operators licensed outside the province are relying on that outside regulator, not on a provincial one.
The four Atlantic provinces are served by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, which runs the regulated online platform for the region. Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are served through regional lottery arrangements rather than territorial private licensing.
None of these jurisdictions has opened an Ontario-style private register. The legal gambling age is 19 across Atlantic Canada and the three territories.
Operators are required to verify age and identity. Being under the legal age in your province means you cannot legally hold an account, however the site is licensed.

For most people playing recreationally, casino winnings in Canada are treated as a windfall rather than income, and are not taxed as income. Two qualifications matter. If gambling is carried on as a business, the position changes. And any investment income you later earn on the money — interest, for example — is taxable in the normal way.

The Criminal Code provisions on unlawful gaming are directed at those who provide and profit from gambling, not at individual players, and Canadian enforcement has focused on operators. We are not in a position to tell you what is lawful for you personally — that is a question for a lawyer.
The practical point is different and clearer. If you use a site that is not part of Ontario’s registered market, you are outside Ontario’s player protections: no provincial complaint escalation, no Ontario advertising and player-protection standards, and no provincial self-exclusion coverage. If something goes wrong with a withdrawal, your only route is the operator and its own regulator.
Never use a VPN or false location details to reach a site that is not registered for your province. It breaches the operator’s own terms, and it is a common reason accounts are frozen and withdrawals refused at verification.

The Kahnawake Gaming Commission is an established regulator that has licensed online gaming from the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawà:ke since 1999. A Kahnawake licence is a genuine regulatory licence, but it is not a provincial authorisation and it does not make a site part of Ontario’s registered market.
